In which cases is spinal fixation surgery performed?

Technology and medicine have advanced a lot, so much so that now they literally allow us to fix the spine, helping people with severe back pain, contractures and fatigue, and who do not respond to conventional treatments, immobilizing the joints using transpedicular screws or other type, intersomatic boxes, bars or plates.

This type of surgery – known as arthrodesis – will give patients quality of life by correcting the alignment of the vertebrae, permanently fusing two or more bones, and restoring stability and health.

But, in which cases should spinal fixation be performed?

In the first place, it is important to have a specialized and accurate diagnosis, supported by clinical parameters and X-rays, MRIs or Computerized Axial Tomography (the famous CT).

That is, your doctor will possibly ask you to have these types of images performed when there is instability or foresee that there is deformity in the lumbar spine, and later he could decide that a spinal fixation surgery is necessary.

This diagnosis can start from different causes:

  • Unstable fractures and severe traumatic injuries. Of course, stable fractures do not require surgery and are commonly managed with a brace and / or analgesics.
  • Deformity of the spine, known as scoliosis, especially when curves are very pronounced or are worsening.
  • Degenerative pathologies: We are talking about cases of stenorrhachis or spondylolisthesis, for example.

The first pathology represents a decrease in the area of the spinal canal, made up of 33 vertebrae that articulate with each other, narrowing the spine and compressing the nerve roots, which causes pain and even neurological weakness.

The second is a condition in which a bone in the spinal column travels forward, out of place, and over the anterior vertebra. This generally occurs in the lower lumbar vertebrae.

  • Post-surgical injuries: Occur as a side effect of another surgery.
  • Congenital lesions or lesions increased by genetic predisposition.
  • Tumor lesions: metastases and malignant primary tumors.
  • In addition, fixation is the best solution in herniated disc surgery in the cervical spine.
