Spine and Nerve Surgery

Spine surgery encompasses a range of procedures designed to treat diseases and injuries affecting the vertebrae, intervertebral discs, spinal cord, and nerve roots.

It may be an option when back pain, neck pain, pain in the extremities, loss of strength, numbness, or functional limitations persist despite treatments such as medications, physical therapy, or lifestyle modifications.

Among the conditions that most commonly may require spine surgery are:

  • Cervical or lumbar disc herniations.
  • Spinal stenosis or narrowing of the spinal canal.
  • Spinal cord and nerve root compression.
  • Spondylolisthesis or vertebral displacement.
  • Vertebral fractures.
  • Spinal deformities, such as scoliosis or kyphosis.
  • Tumors affecting the spine or spinal cord.

Factors that may increase the risk of developing spinal disorders include:

  • Age-related degenerative changes.
  • Mechanical overload from work-related or sports activities.
  • Frequent heavy lifting.
  • Poor posture maintained over long periods.
  • Overweight or obesity.
  • History of trauma or accidents.

Not all patients with spinal conditions require surgery. In many cases, symptoms can improve with conservative treatments. However, when there is compression of the nerves or spinal cord, disabling pain, or progressive neurological deterioration, surgical intervention may be the best option to restore function and relieve symptoms.

Each procedure is planned individually according to the diagnosis, the location of the problem, and the specific needs of the patient. The goal is to restore spinal stability, decompress nervous structures, and allow for a safe and effective recovery.
