Vertebral Fractures and Spinal Pain
Vertebral fractures are injuries that affect one or more bones of the spinal column. They can occur as a result of trauma, falls, accidents, or the progressive weakening of the bones due to conditions such as osteoporosis.
Depending on the severity and location of the fracture, symptoms may range from localized pain to neurological impairments caused by compression of the spinal cord or nerve roots.
Most common causes of vertebral fractures:
- Osteoporosis and loss of bone density.
- Falls from heights or household accidents.
- Motor vehicle accidents.
- High-impact sports injuries.
- Tumors that weaken the bony structures of the spine.
- Diseases that affect bone strength.
Symptoms may include:
- Severe back or neck pain.
- Difficulty walking or performing daily activities.
- Reduced mobility.
- Weakness in the arms or legs.
- Tingling sensations or loss of sensation.
- Loss of bladder or bowel control in more severe cases.
Not all vertebral fractures require surgery. Some can be treated with rest, medications, physical therapy, or the use of supportive devices. However, when spinal instability, progressive deformity, persistent pain, or neurological impairment is present, surgical intervention may be necessary to stabilize the spine and protect the nervous structures.
Treatment is determined on an individual basis following a comprehensive clinical evaluation and specialized imaging studies. The goal is to relieve pain, restore spinal stability, and promote a safe recovery that allows the patient to return to daily activities with the best possible quality of life.
