Low back pain

The origin of the pain comes from the musculoskeletal structure of the spine, due to sedentary work or activities that require great physical effort.

Low back pain affects both young and old adults and the most frequent symptoms are local or irradiated pain, inflammation and the presence of muscle contractures.

Depending on the degree of involvement and root compression, the patient may suffer sensitivity changes, such as anesthesia, hypo anesthesia, hyperesthesia, tingling, and difficulties in movement, such as paresis and paralysis.

To diagnose the condition, a medical history and physical examination are evaluated. Diagnostic imaging aid in establishing other causes of lumbar pain, such as tumors or disc herniations,

The treatment implies a wide range of alternatives, such as physical activity, postural hygiene (avoiding overload on the back), applying cold or heat to the painful area and pharmacological treatment.

Surgery is only applicable in proven cases of herniated disc, spinal stenosis, spondylolisthesis (displacement of one vertebra over another) or progressive scoliosis in children or adolescents.
