Ependymomas
Ependymoma is a glioma type tumor originating from the cells that cover the cerebral ventricles and spinal aqueduct.
These are rare tumors but occupy the 4th place among the tumors affecting children and young adults.
In children, most ependymomas are found in the posterior fossa, and in adults it tends to be located in the spinal cord.
Signs and symptoms depend on its location and size. In newborns and infants an abnormal head growth me be the initial symptoms, associated with irritability and vomiting. In older children and adults most, frequent symptoms include those associated with hydrocephalus due to blocking of normal cerebrospinal fluid flow, and medullary manifestations, such as loss of strength in both arms and legs.
Diagnosis of ependymomas requires the assistance of a medical exam and an MRI or CT scan.
A multidisciplinary medical team is needed in order to offer the best treatment possible, including, neurosurgeon, medical oncologist, and radiotherapist, among others.
