Definition, complications and treatment"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wpb-content-wrapper\"><p>[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]<a href=\"\/en\/vascular-surgery\/cavernomas\/\">Cerebral cavernomas<\/a> are blood vessel malformations, which often causes problems in the brain and spinal cord.<\/p>\n<p>They have the appearance of a small berry, with different diameters, and although they can be hereditary, they most commonly appear sporadically.<\/p>\n<p>When a cavernous malformation rupture,\u00a0 bleeding in the brain or spinal cord, can trigger a variety of neurological symptoms, among which can be found:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Recurrent episodes of bleeding can cause seizures, especially when the cavernomas are present in the frontal or temporal lobe.<\/li>\n<li>Vision alterations, when malformations form in the brainstem, basal ganglia, or upper spinal cord.<\/li>\n<li>Weakness, instability, difficulty speaking and understanding others<\/li>\n<li>Intense headaches<\/li>\n<li>Progressive neurological alterations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Complications<\/h2>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_column_text]Cavernous malformations are usually benign and asymptomatic, but complications can also arise when recurrent bleeding, or hemorrhage, leads to progressive neurological damage.<\/p>\n<p>The chances of recurrent bleeding occur when the malformations are located in the brain stem.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;9677&#8243; img_size=&#8221;full&#8221; onclick=&#8221;link_image&#8221;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]In any case, it is vitally important to seek medical help when seizures, severe and sudden headaches, nausea and vomiting, or any of the other symptoms I mentioned above occur.<\/p>\n<h2>Treatment<\/h2>\n<p>Neurosurgeons and other physicians specializing in brain and nervous system diseases developed a three-step treatment to treat brain cavernomas:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Observation:<\/strong> In the presence of an asymptomatic brain cavernoma, we carry out surveillance work, using magnetic resonance imaging, to observe if the malformation presents changes.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Medications:<\/strong> We use them as a possible solution, to stop seizures related to a cavernous malformation.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Surgery:<\/strong> If the symptoms are related to a cerebral cavernoma that can be accessed surgically, we remove the malformation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To achieve optimal results in this field of surgery, I rely on the most advanced technologies in magnetic resonance imaging and tractography.<\/p>\n<p>I am <a href=\"\/en\/about-me\/\"><strong>Dr. Andr\u00e9s Morales<\/strong><\/a>, a specialist in <a href=\"\/en\/vascular-surgery\/\">neurovascular surgery<\/a>.
